Skirmish Battle Thread

Well.... Nuts. Any extra training gained, or just go look on the XP chart? Morale changes? I'll send 3 wounded soldiers back to Wan on the 2 wounded horses and 1 healthy horse, keeping the 4th with the company. The dead horses are left, and the company heads out as the riders make their way back to the city.

I take it since this is a Day 4 event, movement after the skirmish will be considered Day 5?

It's only a short clash, but it's still a big thing for the fresh recuits, so troops gain +5 training. You gain normal battle EXP. Note that as you move deeper into hostile territory, sending wounded soldiers back to the the city without escort will be dangerous (it's OK this time).

Yes, any post battle movement will take place in Day 5 (submit your turn as usual).

Were there any prisoners, or did all wounded escape due to being on horse?

They were able to escape due to you being unable to pursue (if there were more wounded enemies, perhaps there would have some prisoners).

And here we are.

The same man you met yesterday emerges from the retinue:

"Your orders, sir!"

"Take sixty riders from the green troop and capture this Dai Ren. As for the band of peasants he commands, scatter them. Leave your bodyguards behind, I don't want you to miss a fight by accident like yesterday. I will be watching"

Dai Ren is separate from the infantry he commanded to retreat, so as far as orders goes... Engage Qin Yi in a duel? Hope the infantry can run far enough?

The detached force going to engage your troop is taking its time and moving at walking pace for now, giving you enough time to rejoin your infantry and give them orders. After all, the king wants a good show.

Understood. Dai Ren will rejoin his troops. Dai Ren will join the Reverse Wedge formation of 60(15) troops, with the other 26(15) wielding bows behind the formation, including the wounded. If the wounded are not applicable for battle, then the formation will be 60(15) infantry as a reverse wedge and 16(15) wielding bows behind.

Dai Ren will stand in the first line of the center of the formation. The Archers will Volley as the cavalry approach. As the melee combat ensues the archers will attempt to swarm around the fighting and engage with melee weapons. If the cavalry do not charge straight into the formation, the formation will reverse itself from a Reverse Wedge to a regular Wedge and protect the Archers from being flanked. Dai Ren will seek out Qin Yi and force a duel like last time.

As you finish giving orders, the cavalry begins to charge towards you. A small contigent draws bows.

Round 1

Archers use Volley with moderate success. Rebel Horse archers (2 killed, 3 wounded), Rebel Cavalry (1 killed, 1 wounded).
Infantry holds (small defence bonus).
The Horse archers shoot at your archers (2 killed, 4 wounded), only to be hit back with counter fire (reduced effectiveness due to Dai Ren being with infantry). Rebel Horse archers (2 killed, 1 wounded)
Qin Yi Charges with his cavalry. Cavalry (8 killed, 11 wounded), Infantry (9 killed, 9 wounded). Dai Ren's infantry holds, but they are shaken.
Infantry fights back. The reverse wedge is helpful in funneling enemies and minimising further casualties. Cavalry (2 killed, 4 wounded), Infantry (2 killed, 3 wounded).

In the fighting, you come face to face with Qin Yi (ad-hoc duel, 5 rounds)!
Qin Yi is a bit under 70 War and has Weaponmaster.
Note small changes to Feint and Secret (at the bottom of the rules page)

That Shang Bao guy did some work ;) Any reason why DR started the battle with 94 health? He wasn't injured, though I suppose it makes no difference as he won. Anything else required?

That's what happens when you forget to update the first line in a template. Fixed. Dai Ren started with with less health due to being in frontline command as stated in the rules:

First Line:The officer fights in the first line with his troops, fighting enemies alongside them. This style is well suited to frontline officers with high War and duel skills.
Advantages: Extra kills in battle, higher chance of ad-hoc duels, chance to improve troop morale by personal example.
Disadvantages: Will lose energy, making the officer have less "HP" for ad-hoc duels. Higher chance of injury in battle. More vulnerable to certain ploys.

This represents build up of fatigue and small injuries from fighting on the front line.

Other than this I will later roll the rest of the battle. Do you want to shout any extra orders to your troops.

Ah ok, fair enough. Order the archers to join in melee since I'm presuming Dai Ren's offense at this point is limited

Round 2

Archers join the fray and hold (small defence bonus).
Infantry holds (small defence bonus).
The Horse archers do the same.
Qin Yi attacks the combined force in a messy melee. Rebel Cavalry (5 killed, 4 wounded). Rebel Horse Archers (2 killed, 2 wounded). Infantry (5 killed, 8 wounded), Archers (2 killed, 1 wounded)
Infantry together with archers fights back, maintaining a defensive formation. Rebel Cavalry (2 killed, 2 wounded), Infantry (1 killed, 1 wounded), Archers (1 wounded).

Round 3

Archers hold (small defence bonus).
Infantry holds (small defence bonus).
Qin Yi notices the rapidly shrinking number of healthy cavalry at his side and wheels away to prepare for a final charge, when he is stopped by the king.

Final casualties count:
Archers: 5 killed, 7 wounded
Infantry: 17 killed, 21 wounded
Rebel Cavalry: 18 killed, 23 wounded
Rebel Horse Archers: 6 killed, 6 wounded.

Qin Yi, that's enough. You pulled out too soon. And you lack training in your personal combat skill. 10 lashes for you after you recover from injury. I expect you do better next time. Rest of the unit, you clearly need more training if you can't even trample over a peasant militia. Evening break will be replaced with extra training for 2 weeks for you.

Do you want to say anything?

No, I think thats enough grandstanding for one day. Dai Ren orders his troops to gather the wounded and retreat toward the city if Ma Han does not intercede.

Ma Han, still sitting that same spot, shouts to you.

Well, that was not bad at all. You may give me a glorious battle after all. Don't forget your your battle spoils, you have earned them. And here, a gift from me for the entertainement provided.

A single rider sets out from the the group with another riderless horse. Around 50 paces from your troops, he plants a spear into the ground and throws the riderless horse's reins over it. The rider then returns, leaving the horse behind.

You central plains people barely have any real horses. With this, you will have something more adequate. Now, off you go, and don't come back without a army worth my time.

You gain loot is a per previously established rules: killed soldiers (yours or enemy) give you damaged gear (regular horsemen have normal weapons, horse archers drop bows). You also gain 12 horses (8 injured, 4 healthy). And you gain a Liangzhou Horse (Lead +1 Mount)
