Simzhou Skirmish Roleplay

There was a nervousness to Xiang's step when she approached the warehouse. Her first time volunteering for a military duty of any kind, applying for a position of leadership no less, requested by her devoted students. There had been feelings of patriotism, duty to the Son of Heaven, youthful exuberance and perhaps naivety among them upon hearing of the threat to the south, and after much urging from her students and some of their friends who had already volunteered as fresh recruits for the patrols, she had allowed them to talk her into taking up the duty. She'd chosen her brightest as her immediate auxiliaries to support her, at least, but the steps right now she had to go alone.

Thus she approached the garrison warehouse, finding her way inside, to the man pacing amidst paper covered desks. An introduction was necessary, though it did not come easily to her.

"My name is Shi Xiang. I am a humble scholar come to volunteer to do what I can to restore order to the land.", she bowed, addressing the man in charge. "Mh... m-may I see your maps?", she flubbed, afterwards.

Li Sheng responds with the standard query aboout the name and rank, before showing the main map with of the city outskirts.

A scholar? Very well. So, what do you plan to do with your troop?

Xiang poured over the maps for a while, taking into account much of what the man had described to other applicants about the situation and would likely tell her aswell. Eventually, she pointed to the exposed villages.

"We shall put together the pieces. We shall speak to the people, hear their accounts of the rebels movements, check roads and by-ways for tracks and inspect the geography. The rebels fingers have begun to touch these places, you say, so we shall follow the fingers to the hand." Xiang lifted her gaze from the maps and stepped toward Li Sheng, nodding. "I have a few skilled students that shall aid me in these things. The enemy must have camps, routes and supplies. Or if they do not, they must come to take them from these villages. We will try to determine where the likely camps are, what routes they will take and where they have been. I do not expect to oust them from their position, but if we can cut off their attempts to rob these villages we might starve them out of hiding."
She smiled, trying to sound as confident as possible. In truth, much of this was winging it, speaking of things far more practical than her theoretical learning had involved so far. "Perhaps, if it amounts to nothing else, I shall at least have a newer map to offer you." Xiang offered half-joking to hide her nerves.

Liu Jia strode purposefully into the warehouse. A carefully groomed man, his moustache neatly twirled and his hair neatly knotted atop his head. He was also notably clean. However, contrasting all this was an old single-edged blade and a motley combination of protective clothing making up something resembling armour. Across his front was a painstakingly crafted purple marking that looked as if it had been painted there relatively recently.

Announcing himself at the entrance, Liu Jia called, "My name is Liu Jia and I have been sent to meet with Commander Li." He then awaited a response from inside, bowing his head respectfully at the door.

Li Sheng nods.

Indeed, scouting and gathering intelligence is as important as fighting the raiders themselves. You can ue whatver strategy you find appropriate.

But I do wonder. If it does come to combat, how will you fare? You may find it useful to team up with someone more... combat minded for these situations. Do not worry, you will still both get your full reward.

"It may come to that." Xiang nods. "Though for now I will employ tactics to minimize our profile and exposure, and as it stands the current goal is not to inflict casualties. If they move against the villages we will focus purely on repelling efforts to seize anything. When it comes to operations deeper within the field I hope my fellow volunteers will come together."

In the warehouse, Li Sheng is walking from one desk covered with scrolls, to another. Seeing Ma Kan walk in, he grabs a cup of cold tea from his desk. Taking a sip, he looks at the newcomer.

Name, please. Any formal rank or past command position?

(Mmmm..activity. I like :))

He looks to where the soldier is pointing..a warehouse? Things must have gotten really bad here if official business is being conducted in the warehouse.

Mao Ma Kan enters the place and salutes the man who appears to be in charge.

"I am Mao MaKan. No previous formal rank but I served under the command of Han Sui and Ma Teng overlooking the borders with the barbarians. I am reasonably skilled with the bow and led their archers."

He looks around to get a proper bearing of his surrounding.

"I heard you guys had a situation with the rebels and brigands here. So I assembled some soldiers with many promises of gold and fame and came here."

Was there anything else he wanted to add? Oh yeah.

"There is a rumor going around that soldiers would be working solo or with a group? Just want you to know that I could work either independently or as part of a team. Here's my resume."

He hands Li Sheng a scroll with list of his credentials including skills, stats, hobbies and interests etc.

Mao MaKan

Li Sheng looked at the man's credentials. Everything looked reasonable and the man had a wide array of skills.

Skilled with archers? I'll authorise the armory to provide some bows for your men. Have you decided where you want patrol? Li Sheng gestures to the map. We have one man who wants to head northeast, but other directions haven't got a team assigned yet.

As for forming a team, you can decide that. Feel free to ask the other officer recruits coming here. When you have made a decision, you can collect the proof of authority from that desk.

Mao Ma Kan looked at the map and nodded along.

"If it is all the same to you, I would like to start the patrol at the local brewery and then check through the pubs, ale houses and taverns in the city... to make sure everything is alright."

First target. Make sure the wine tastes good. For the victory celebrations later of course.

He looked around the warehouse and noticed a couple of other people. A scholar and a man who seemed familiar for some reason. He cupped his chin thoughtfully observing Liu Jia.

"You look awfully familiar good man. Have we met before?"

Liu Jia follows the guards inside and sees the man he knows is Li Sheng. He has seen him before at a distance, though never up close.

"Commander Li, I am Liu Jia. I have been tasked to assist your plans by Gongsun Ji. I am a member of a militia who rallied to Wan from the surrounding countryside recently," he said. "Commander Gongsun humbly recommends our own hand-picked men from the militia who might be able to help out. There are thirty of us in all who have shown the most promise in training and have battled these brigands earlier in the year, as well as having demonstrated great restraint and discipline during the riots. I hope that you will accept our earnest assistance."

He then paused before continuing, wondering whether he ought to add anymore. "I am personally not a great leader of men, nor an impressive fighter... I am merely a farmer. However, I am very organised and can often assist in more efficient use of resources. I also know the area better than most, having grown up and lived in the area all my life. I hope that you might find some use for me amongst your volunteers."

@Rebel
Turning to see a figure observing him thoughtfully, Liu Jia raised an eyebrow at the question. "I can't say I know your face I am afraid, which suggests we do not know one another... yet," he replied. "I am a new recruit here in Wan... though in truth we are more of a well trained peasant militia so far. My name is Jia, family name Liu. Who might you be, knower of strangers?"

Mao Ma Kan let out a hearty laugh at his new title.

"Perhaps not. I am not very good with faces. Don't we all just look the same?"

He ran his hand through his hair not paying much attention to what he was saying.

"My name is Mao Ma Kan. I come from the border province of Liang. That's three days journey to the northwest. Four if you are riding on a slow horse. I worked there as a caravan escort until recently."

Did he say, family name Liu?

"Isn't the magistrate of the city also some Liu?"

He asked no one in particular.

Do what you wish, but there is no pay for staying within the city walls. Misuse patrol funds will be considered embezzlement and dealt with military law.

But if it's your own money, I can't stop you from using it as you wish.

Liu Jia
Li Sheng smiles at the mention of Gongsun Ji.

Ah yes, I remember the old man Gongsun. This explains the well trained men. If the old veteran picked you out, I am sure you will be useful. Whether you wish to head off alone, or form a team with someone is up to you. Let me know when you have made your decision.

@ShadInquis
Jia nodded. He also made a mental note to specifically leave out the words "old man Gongsun" should he relay his meeting back to his venerable superior. Bowing graciously once more, Liu Jia excused himself and went to examine the various maps, charts and other informational documents laid out on tables. He did his best to appear approachable to any onlookers.

@Rebel
"We are all of us passers by in someone else's story," Liu Jia quipped.

"You are from the border? There are all sorts of strangers coming and going around these days, a great many more than any other time I know. I am a Wan native. What drew you to this area? I doubt there are any caravans coming through this area at the moment."

"The new Magistrate is indeed of the Liu name. Some of us are ruling cities, one is even the Son of Heaven! And yet some of us such as myself are mere men of the soil."

There goes my hopes of an easy vacation. Mao Ma Kan sighed.

"Ah yes. We must patrol outside the city. Away from the safety of the city walls. Makes much more sense."

He felt the bow on his back. At least I will have a trusty weapon to shoot at them from afar. The celebrating can wait.

He nodded along at the comment.

"That is true. Mere background characters in each others story. Doesn't mean we can't be interesting though."

He winked as Liu Jia asked him a question. Oh boy..more background story.

"What drew me here? You mean the city of Wan? Fame. Reward. The prospect of an adventure. I dunno. Things were boring back in the border towns. The most exciting thing we did was shoot crows for practice. Then I heard about the rebellion and had to come here and see what it was all about."

Ma Kan was thoughtful for a moment trying to look smart. The moment passed soon enough.

"A son of the soil? I overheard that you are a farmer and know the area around the city well?"

"The border was not exciting enough for you? Not enough trouble brewing from the horse-tribes out in Liang province, eh? My commanding officer in the city is from the northern border, though he seems to believe the architects of our doom lie within our own forces than without. I suppose that's playing out now within our very homes now, we didn't even need an invasion..." Liu Jia mused sadly. Privately he admired the sense of adventure Mao Ma Kan displayed, willing to go to and fro from exciting place to exciting place.

"Yes, I am rooted to the ground here. I was born on a farm about a day's walk from the city and have lived in the area ever since. I am no hardened warrior, but if our produce is threatened by these rebels, I must give my all to protect the livelihoods of the soil-man community."

"Do you have a plan for fighting the enemy then?" he asked, noting the great bow on the back of the other man.
