Wan City Main Hall Roleplay

The Brothers Bo

The older man listened intently to the young man and nodded his head in agreement. It was the younger girl who spoke, giving a warm practiced smile to the younger brother, yet her hand didn't cease at writing down all that was being said. Her voice was light and airy; "Do not fear, young man. The former Magistrate's excesses created a miasma in Wan which broke the spirits of even the most devout Civil Officials." There was a hint of resentment in her voice. "We have all begun to wonder in recent days why we did not take action sooner, the truth is that it is because there was no impetus to do so. We had all grown too comfortable with the current state of affairs." The older man cleared his throat and took up speaking. "The worthless rat of a man fled to the North when he had heard Xiang Yang had fallen. That wouldn't have been too bad, Heavens it would have been good! What he did and what was unforgivable was to also convince high officials of every persuasion to seize all the riches they could and "evacuate" to the Capital!" He nearly spit on the ground in disgust, but remembered he was on official business, so he swallowed the saliva and looked slightly embarrassed at the two young men.

As Bo Liao spoke, the eldest Aide to Cai Bin waved his hands as if to clear up a misunderstanding. "First you must meet with Master Cai, surely we cannot bestow a seal of Office on any wanderer that walks into Wan. Refugees have been pouring in from the South in recent days. If we were to make even each head of the household an officer we would have more officers than the Capital itself! This city is already lacking in resources, we cannot squander any more."

The missing person of their troupe was another brother. A small groan was heard from the young girl in sympathy, not that she had not heard stories of this sort, but these were not men, they were boys, scarcely older than she was, a tragedy to be torn from family in such a manner, a fate she could never imagine. The bearded man's eyes narrowed and looked down towards the ground. His tone suddenly became almost statesmanlike and solemn. "You may inquire into your brother at the Garrison. I am afraid as Aides of Master Cai we do not have the full listings of the people in the city, though we number greatly, we cannot stop everyone who enters into Wan and ask them to give us their life stories."

The Brothers Jia

The old man followed the young man's directions and found the room containing Jia Liang. The immediate entry drew shock from the old man. It was indeed worse than the rumors said. The man was nigh unrecognizable to the elegantly composed man he had seen only in the previous month. Several left eye-twitches emerged from Cai Bin. He was not used to this sort of violence, especially upon so gentle a man. He moved slowly to the side of the bedridden man as he gave a sympathetic bow to both the young woman and Jia Chun. He sat down at the foot of the Senior Minister's bed, his own voice clearly stricken with surprise. "Wh-what happened Minister Jia? I h-heard last month of your disappearance as you were no longer in assembly to daily business. I inquired after several days to your estate by sending an Aide. The Aide replied that the guard had said that you sojourned to parts unknown. Now you return and..." He sadly extended his arms, his look mixed with sympathy, wonder, and shame, almost feeling as if he was the cause of it by not gifting the position of Prefect to Jia Liang. "You are in such a state. You are not simply wounded beyond measure, but harried, as if you had escaped from an awful fate I can scarcely imagine." He stopped speaking as he looked up in confusion and melancholy towards the young woman and the veteran commander (and doctor, and mystic, and reconnaissance expert).

XY and See

As the girl smiled, Bo Lai heart raced a little. He was a little surprised that she would replied him in place of the older and clearly more senior person. Before he could replied, he did hear his brother and his ever so deadly Tsk. As the girl and the aide explained the position of how Wan was exploited by the former magistrate, Bo Lai felt a sense of dismay. After all, where he and his brother came from, their magistrate did about the same thing. Raise taxes, employ their lackeys to key position, lackeys fail, blame the population for their lackeys failure and then raise taxes again.

As the older man explained, Bo Lai can tell that the feelings towards the former Magistrate was that of hatred, something that Bo Lai had with all Magistrates he had seen in his life. Breaking protocol and possibly incurring yet another round of Tsk from his brother, he spoke up "So your former Magistrate ran with all the city wealth together with most of the administration. So your Master Cai is able to bestow a seal on anyone, but surely he needs to know who and what we can do, isn't? I fully understand that not everyone is capable of being an officer of the city. But trust me, my brother is more than able to run any administration, finance or human resources better than any of your previous civil officers! You defintely need him.."

Bo Lai totally forgot about the protocol when it came to praising his brother. He looked at the girl and said "Please write that down. Especially the part on better than previous officials." He tried to peer at what the girl wrote but realised that he could not read beyond his name.

He told his brother "I can stay by the gate and start looking for him after you settled down."

"Of course, sir." Bo Liao replied respectfully when informed that they would have to meet Cai Bin in person before getting a position with the government in Wan city. He is determined to secure a position for himself and Bo Lai. This could be a turning point in their life. "We will adhere to any protocols and may we request to meet master Cai in view for possible employment to assist in developing Wan city back to their glory."

At this point Bo Lai start to give his views and hastily he pulled his arm back. "Lai! Show some respect to the officials. Leave the lady alone." Bo Liao gave a look at him with hushed stern tone. "Whether are we capable enough, that is Master Cai Bin's call." Bo Liao was kind of embarrassed when Bo Lai's comments on his administration knowledge. Actually he doesn't know whether is he capable or not. But remembered studying lots of books and politicians of old such as Shang Yang, Han Fei, Confucius and Mo Zi. Those days he lamented why did the old man forced him to study these but now he is glad that his old man did. However, he doesn't have the actual experience in running a town, not to say a city. Perhaps their small village, but definitely not this size.

"Sir, I apologized if I have overstepped myself. I will keep a lookout on my other brother if he managed to turn up. I would not wish to impose on anyone." Bo Liao replied. "May I ask, when can we pay a visit to Master Cai?" Bo Liao glances at Bo Lai with dagger stare as if sending telepathic link warning him not to say or do anything funny. Respectful statements yes, but not asking the lady whether is she married, have boyfriend or want to go for dating and stuff.

The young lady wistfully laughed behind the sleeves of her robe at the young man's earnest description of his brother's abilities. Not that they were in doubt, but that this sort of forwardness was far from the norm, especially from the many office seekers. They would often choose a humble approach or more often aggrandize themselves and argue with their traveling companions on why they should be chosen as officers. That he would speak so well of his brother showed the man was straightforward and filial. Two aspects that she knew her patron treasured deeply. She bowed her head lightly. "It has been duly recorded Master..." She caught herself, realizing she had no name to assign. "I am afraid neither of you gentleman have given your names yet."

The older, more cultured young man's countenance brought a smile to the well-muscled man's face. "Once the little lady gives her report he will no doubt send for the both of you in short order." He laughed loudly. "Needless to say you two have been the most interesting prospects to walk through these gates all month. I am certain Master Cai will say the same thing." The two boys looked to not only be tired from travelling but also seeming to show signs of undernourishment. "Y'know what. Come with us. We'll see that your interview is as soon as possible." The young girl looked warily at her companion. She spoke softly so that only the large man could hear her. Unfortunately the large man has no quiet voice. "You worry too much, little one. Master Cai won't mind. In fact he'd be glad to see such promise. Also look at these two..." he gestured towards the brothers. "They look nearly starved. The Aides can at least have them fed while they wait." He looked over to the two young men. "Are there any objections?"

Following his brother's stern warning to be more polite, Bo Lai wondered how he was not already in his utmost polite behavior. Bo Lai behavior was obviously less cultured, less refined as compared to his brother. His brother went to school while he waited for him in the school yard, working with the gardener and handyman. His now deceased adopted father realized that he could not put all his eggs into one basket, which was why his eldest brother studied in schools while Bo Lai was educated in the school of hard knocks.

Since the girl asked him a question, he would have to reply based on protocol "That will be Bo Lai. I also realized that you did not give us your name either..." Bo Lai never really had any girl around his age asking him for his name. Most of them were just instructing him to repair the school's broken tables, chairs, fences and what not. Unless he counted that maids but they did not count much as he did not count either.

Upon hearing the older man talking about interviews, Bo Lai was nervous. He never attended any interviews much less with one that is certainly important in Wan city. He glanced at his brother, hinting to his brother that its best he attended to the interview and in the process, employ Bo Lai as his man servant, body guard, usher, cleaner and aide. Hopefully his brother understood him as much as he understood his brother not to make passes to the girl.

Just as he was about to have a panic attack about the interview, the man started talking about food. His mood brightened up and said to him "No objections, Sir, Definitely none from me." He followed his brother's protocol in respecting a senior official.

Bo Liao was a little relief when he see that both officials weren't displeased with Bo Lai's straightforwardness. After hearing what the elder official has to say, "I thank you for your kind words, sir. Of course, we will follow your decisions and what you think is better for us." With a deep bow, "We are grateful for your arrangement. We are indeed... famished from the long journey." Turning towards to the lady official, "My lady, your humble civilian name is Bo Liao. But it is really not necessary to record what my brother had request for you to write down pertaining to me. I would prefer to let my results determine my worth."

Bo Liao observed quietly when the young lady spoke quietly to the elder official, probably something. Either master Cai Bin is pretty tied up and it could be months even we can see him. Or probably.... " Bo Liao looked at himself and at Bo Lai, ".... our shabby dressing isn't appropriate to be seen in the audience of master Cai Bin."

Recounting The Skirmish
@Rebel

Jian Bian sat on the floor on some stained furs in one of the less reputable taverns in Wan. The people around him were the sort he liked; cutt-throats, mercenaries, courtesans, and tricksters. Establishments like these were in every city, no matter how civil or idealistic the population. Men of war needed three things in order to function and this place provided them all: women, food/drink, and opportunity to make gold.

It was the day after the skirmish teams returned to Wan and Bian sat patiently awaiting for Sun Xiang to join him. Although he barely knew the man, his letter was intriguing. Bian could hardly read himself, one of the soldiers he faught with had conveyed the message and sent a reply on his behalf, something or other about recounting the events of the previous day.

He took a sip of wine and eyed the door. Normally a place like this might be dangerous for an established official of the government but Bian hardly considered himself established or in-tone with his fellow officers. While it seemed most of them operated off a polite code of ethics, the archer general was much more gritty and unrefined. He cared very little for politics or making friends, instead opting to chase a piece of tail every now and then while trying to make a name for himself and get rich in the process. That was his code of ethics now... that he had nothing.

Leave the ideals and dreamers to his betters.

From his position he could see everything in the tavern, for he was nicely tucked away in the right corner of the room.

"...very good health..." Be continued on, aghast. He had been caught off guard by this... unusual scene. The man - his guest - had clearly dispensed with manners or moderation and was eating in a style not unbefitting a boar.

"Maybe... maybe he's just been deprived of good food recently and needed to take us up on our hospitality and I guess it's fine that he would want to sit in the chair while he waited and I have been making him wait and... wait, are they the cushions from the floor?" He looked around and found no other seats available in the hall and, in a stunned stupor, realised Xiang had used them for extra comfort on an already comfortable chair. This was certainly quite the first impression. It did leave the Prefect in an awkward situation; not wishing to seem like a stuffy tyrant but also not wishing to seem spineless. He, instead, found an alternative.

"How wonderful to see our accomodation has been well met. Now, shall we move into my personal office so that we can begin to talk?" His smile was a practised one. A statesman's one. His eyebrow was showing a slight twitch, however, no matter how much he had practised controlling it.

The Fox

Xiang scouted the premises nodding his head in appreciation. Such a fine establishment. He entered through the door and took a look around at the patrons. Oh what a lovely bunch of people. As soon as he entered, someone welcomed him and offered the scribe a goblet of wine. Xiang bowed low at the friendly gesture and politely declined the cup of wine that went flying over where his head had been just a moment ago.

He cupped his chin. "Now lets see. He is an archer yes. He must have a bow on him or something similar lying around somewhere."

There was a bear of a man on the center table quietly flipping a throwing knife in his hands. Sun Xiang approached him and greeted cheerfully.

"Master Jian Bian. What an honor to meet you, the great archer of our times."

As the man would glare back at Sun Xiang, the scribe took a seat next to him. Noticing the man's empty cup and the killer glare, Xiang called out to the bartender.

"Another round for the good general Jian. Here here for the great victory over the rebel patrols eh?"

The Luke

Xiang gulps the baozi.

"Vewy Wowaful."

Taking the ink pot from his head, he puts it in his pocket. Unbinds the bunches of grapes from his hair, sets them on the tray and looks at the attendant.

"Um.. you can have them. They are not half-eaten or anything."

He bows and nods to the Prefect.

"A great honor to meet you Minister Wai Be. Please lead the way."

He follows the man to his offices.

The young lady bowed her head. she was unused to anyone actually asking her name . Normally the Aides were treated as barely visible machines that went about their given tasks and uttered not a word that wasn't involved in accomplishing the mission in front of them. Her voice betrayed this surprise; "My name... is Aide Lan." Her tone became muted and lacked in passion. "I am one of the Recorders, it is my purpose to record conversation, no matter the words or context." The older man had no such reservations as he leaped in with a hearty tone. "I'm Aide Yan. Nice to meet you Bo Brothers!" He bowed in a casual fashion to the men then placed a hand to his heavily bearded face. "Your clothes are rather travel worn, hmm... for a better impression the Aides will give you a chance of clothes before you eat." He quickly called over two other Aides wearing that same strange tiny, but unique (to the Aides) cap and instructed them to watch the gates. With this done he turned back to the boys and smiled. "Well then, let's be off to the Main Hall!"

The Main Hall was in the middle of the city, thus the walk took ten to twenty minutes on foot. They would notice that they had come to the back of it, as the City Center was facing the North, it was not a very grand structure. It looked as if it may have once been adorned with various decorations, but now it is austere and drab, if not slightly imposing. In several minutes they walked around to the front and entered, the guards not even stopping them, recognizing them as Cai Bin's assistants. As they entered the City Center a large open courtyard could be seen with a slightly raised dais at the far north of the courtyard. It was a very open-air affair as the halls were open on all sides to the courtyard with pillars keeping the structure intact.

They eventually turned to the left when Aide Yan spoke to the servants. "We've got some prospects! They've been on the road for a while and need a change of clothes and some good food in their bellies. Don't want them to be fainting in front of Master Cai!" He laughed hoarsely as the servants looked less than amused at having their time taken up by waiting on some kids." The young lady bowed to each young man in turn. "This is where we take our leave. I will give Master Cai my record and Aide Yan will speak on your behalf." The older man nodded happily. "We will send for you when we get the directive, in the mean time relax my young friends!" The Aides disappeared down the long hall. The servants directed each Bo to a place where they could change in comfort and then return to the room for a forthcoming feast.

Bo Lai had her name, finally a name.... Aide Lan. Was Aide her surname? Then that really sounded odd. But before he had a chance to say anything, the older man moved them off to the Main Hall. Somehow Aide Lan decided to hang further back, possible Bo Lai must have made her feel uncomfortable. "Too bad" he whispered to his brother.

As they walked and walked, Bo Lai looked at his brother, wondering if the pace was too fast for him. He wished there was a carriage or a sedan but then since his brother was yet to be employed, this were obviously not available for him as of now. He mentally tried to recall the route to the city center as he would need to know it when his brother finally got a job. As much as he wanted to talk to the girl further, his brother would then prod him along.

The route to the Main Hall was uneventful, there were no strays or chickens running around, not birds resting their feet. It must be either that good as in the new administration managed to put things back into order or that bad as in everyone else had eaten them all. As his stomach grumbled, he thought he heard a dog barking but it was in a building. He made a mental note of the building should circumstances required him to have a meal. After all, it was not a 100% chance that his brother could get a job, the official might want a bribe but it is pretty obvious they had nothing.

As they finally reached, Aide Lan excused herself and went away without a second look to Bo Lai. That made him a little sad but before he could really had a chance to be sad, Aide Yan started sending people to get food and clothes for them. As the servants ushered them to a changing area, he said to his brother "Are we really changing, what if they charge us for that? Do you think Aide Lan will be there later?"

Upon hearing how to address them, Bo Liao gave a bow. When Aide Lan mentioned about what she does, Bo Liao thinking to himself. Whoever their superior is or supposedly this Master Cai Bin, must be a very experienced statesman, all in proper records. Nothing left out.

Subsequently Aide Yan also mentioned about their attire, 'Ahhh....' Bo Liao inwardly smile to himself. 'Just as I have thought.' Aide Yan's friendly demeanor appeals to Bo Liao and he made a mental note to make friend with him if he managed to secure a post within the Wan administration.

"Of course Aide Yan, we will not forget your kind hospitality and to Aide Lan as well for being kind to us brothers." Bo Liao nodded his head in respect and follows both aides' lead. Bo Liao was heavy in thoughts trying to piece out different scenarios, possible questions and what to say, what not to say when they meet master Cai Bin. Then he was disturbed by Bo Lai's whispering pertaining to Aide Lan. Bo Liao knitted his eyebrows with a scowl and flicked his finger at Bo Lai's forehead. Giving one last look at Bo Lai and he continued doing the cause and effects theme inside his head. This talk would determine his and Bo Lai's future.

Bo Liao felt the strain on his legs and could even feel those tendons being stretched to the maximum. 'Oh dear, how much do we still have to walk? Will my tendons snapped into two or three or four? Will I become a cripple? If it is so, will I have to depend on Bo Lai to wipe my ass whenever I finished potty? Oh wait, cripple doesn't mean my hands can't move... hehehe... hey! What am I thinking about? Bo Liao shakes furiously his head and stopped for a while. He thought he might faint from the vigorous shaking. 'Focus, focus, focus.'

Finally they reached administration premise, Bo Liao gave a relieved sigh. When Aide Lan and Aide Yan making their leave, Bo Liao paid a respect bow. "The Bo brothers will not forget your kindness." From the side of his eye, Bo Liao spied that look Bo Lai gives after Aide Lan. Gently knocking on Bo Lai's head with a finger. "When you become worthy, women will come flocking to you." Bo Liao paused his conversations as the servants came with new clothes. He nodded to Bo Lai to change in whatever clothes the servants bring. "Yes, we will change and No, I don't know whether will we be charged for the clothes. If so, so be it." Bo Liao took a pause and look questioning to Bo Lai.

"You took a fancy to Aide Lan isn't it?"

"Da Ge, we have no money you know, short of those few coins that you are hiding." Bo Lai said. "So if they charge us, that will mean we have to work for them and whatever the price they set. Like 1 bowl of rice per day or something. How to survive?"

However being a dutiful and obedient brother, he followed his brother whatever he did or said. There was never a question after his brother made the decision, for sure Bo Lai realized that might starve with 1 bowl of rice per day. But then there was that dog too, so that will take care of their meals for a day or two. If they were luckily, they can find other animals to forage when no one was looking. "Like Aide Lan? Not too sure, but I think more like wanting to di siao her. Especially since she has zero expression whenever I di siao her. Makes it all the more interesting no?"

As the new sets of clothing arrived, he said "Good thing its not white, that color is just awful." Recalling that his previous magistrate was always in dressed in the finest whites, claiming how pure and honest he was, when in fact, whenever Bo Lai heard the magistrate's name, he wanted to spit on the floor as that name fouled his mouth and stirred a string of vulgarities that Bo Lai would shout at him.

He wondered if anyone would walk in as he changed especially Aide Lan; that would be more interesting. In any case then he started taking off his pants as soon as his brother reached for the ones most appropriate to his size and started changing into the new ones that were brought to them. There were a few sizes and he grabbed the largest. After all since they may or may not be paying for it, it makes total sense to grab one with the most cloth. After all who knows when the next set would be available.

After the boys were dressed they didn't have to wait much longer for a meal to be brought to them. They were given chicken dumplings, baozi, fish, and a healthy helping of porridge and steamed vegetables. Tea was also delivered to them. These servants, just as much as the last seemed to be perplexed if not annoyed at their current task. At least the food would be good, the chefs likely had no idea who they were making it for.

The heavily wounded minister chuckled once, which quickly descended into pained coughing that made the girl wince. "Apologies, minister." Jia Liang managed once it had subsided. He gestured to the young woman. "Jia Xiuqing, my youngest." She turned and bowed respectfully to Cai Bin before focusing her attention back on her wounded father. "As for how this happened, heh. A foolhardy notion drove me south to the rebel stronghold at Xiang Yang. When I heard some young men meant to infiltrate a strategy meeting. I sought to head them off. They've no business risking their lives like that. So I set out to infiltrate it myself, expecting them to care less about an older man with a minister's background." He coughed a few times again, casting a pained look at Chun as he worked.

"Unfortunately, the rebel guards at the meeting were rather overzealous. Rather than considering what I said, they chose instead to beat me and leave me to die. Fortunately, master Chen Ping had the same foolish notion as I, and found me. It's entirely thanks to him that we made it back alive." The minister took a deep breath and let out a ragged sigh. "One of my worst notions. But at least one I can walk away from."
