SimRTK Logo

Postby Elysia » 20 Dec 2007, 04:12

We have been talking about creating a new logo for SimRTK. Something fresh and new! Don't worry, we will not abandon our three horsemen, they will always be a part of SimRTK . . . . But a smaller part once we find something else.

What we would like to do is see if any of our talented members would like to design a new logo for consideration, or if they have any thoughts or ideas that could be used to create a new logo. Please note that we are not looking for duplication of copyright work—the logo must be original.

The official logo should:
1) Be cool (of course).
2) Be easily converted to vector art. That means gradients should be avoided, it should look good in black and white, and it should use a limited amount of colors (say, three or four).
3) Be readable in small sizes.
4) Remain cool in large sizes.

Any artwork submitted to SimRTK for use in the logo will become property of SimRTK (And the final product may be altered slightly). We are a non-profit group, will always be a non-profit group, and any proceeds will always be put back into the community.

The winner will receive forever access to Kongming’s Archives Odds & Ends section, a soundtrack request of their choice (if it isn’t already featured), and perhaps even something more!! Wheeeee!! You will also receive our thanks! W00t! :wang:

Note: Xian Zhu Xuande will be keeping an eye on this thread and offer feedback!!

Hmm, to be quite honest I know very little about this sort of thing, however I'll be happy to spew forth some ill-conceived ideas.

What about having three ladders leading to a dragon (or some other appropriate Imperial symbol) and various famous warlords in the process of climbing, falling from, or fighting on the ladders; grasping towards the goal (Cao Cao would be closet to top because at most times he was closet to achieving that goal).

Maybe someone can improve on that?

Well, the idea is for finished artwork to be submitted, ideally. But ideas are never a bad alternative.

Questions: Do we know what sort of programs the logo would come into contact with in use? How about collaborations? Use of figures and appropriate colouring?

If an artist wanted to draw something like that, and they made it as cool as it sound like it can be, we would certainly be thrilled to do something with it. It does sound like a fun idea.

But on another note, what we’re looking for here is a logo. Think of all the company logos you see. They are pretty simple but often-times (and preferably in our case) very artistic in their own right. They tend to use a very limited number of colors, avoid gradients, and rely on a crisp defined form which is readable and recognizable at both large and small sizes.

There can be exceptions. SimRTK is a site that can get away with a more colorful logo. But it should still be easily converted (or presented) into or in a vector format (Adobe Illustrator). We can do the legwork if someone draws or comes up with a wonderful idea. We’re just looking for great ideas!

And any questions are fair game.

The final product will be vector art. If the artist in question understands the likes of Adobe Illustrator and can create it as vector art, that is wonderful. If not (as mentioned just above) we can do the legwork.

The artwork would be used in digital form, placed on fabrics of various types, and probably used on paper as well. It will be used in large and small forms (it should be noted that its uses, when they generate any money, will go to supporting SimRTK exclusively).

How it works does not matter. If members want to collaborate they are welcome to! If someone does not know a thing about Adobe Illustrator, but is able to create something we love in paper, I can do the rest of the work myself. We recognize that talents will vary wildly in the forum. :)

Can we "borrow" pieces from Koei and use them in the overall thing like a montage/collage?

Also how about some specs? Max width and height in pixels - or are we limited to the current 182x132?

/me kicks all the nay-sayers who said not to change the logo when I brought it up in IRC last month. :P

Hey, you!

Heretic wrote:Can we "borrow" pieces from Koei and use them in the overall thing like a montage/collage?

We cannot. It must be original.

Perhaps think of it this way:
We must be able to defend it in court as a trademark.

Heretic wrote:Also how about some specs? Max width and height in pixels - or are we limited to the current 182x132?

Vector if possible (which has no set resolution). Otherwise, as huge as possible so it can be properly converted.

Haha. We’ll be seeing some new stuff in the forum pretty soon—it will be receiving a completely new makeover with a new look and countless new features with phpBB 3.0. The three horsemen, though, will remain a part of SimRTK. Just like people love the Cao Cao over at SoSZ.

I do this professionally, among other things, and I'd love to do it for SimRTK. Give me a week or so to reinstall Photoshop and Illustrator, and I'll have something for you. ;)

EDIT>> Just to show off what I can do a little, this is the logo for an upcoming GM-focused RPG site I'll be launching.

EDIT 2>> Do we have the copyrights to the SGYY emoticons on the site?

If I get some spare time over the next few days (unlikely though with crimbo coming up) I'll give it a crack.

Unfortunatley, the best I have is Fireworks (Damn those with Photoshop :x ) so it may not be as "glamourous" as others.

First, there is really no set date for this. It will go on until either 1) I come up with a good idea and do it myself, which—ask Elysia—has taken a while, or 2) Someone comes up with a good idea or logo that we love, and it is applied.

As for appearances, I can handle Photoshop and Illustrator with no trouble at all. If I’ve got vector-appropriate artwork I can easily do the rest. The magic, though, is in the unique logo idea, its appearance, its colors, how it interacts with the site or on different forms of media.

That’s very generous of you. If you do this professionally, perhaps we can approach this from a professional direction? Do you have a portfolio, or an extended collection of work you have done for us to discuss? Depending on your level of interest, I would be thrilled to get in touch with you and work this out on a more direct level. Also, if you are interested, the perfect logo would be of a nature that versions could be made for KMA and SimRTK, too (different logos, but in the same spirit).

I wish I could offer money, but all three sites are non-profit (they cost people—especially me—money, and make almost nothing by way of comparison) and I could not justify spending more than I already do. I wouldn’t have it any other way, though. I love ensuring that all of these sites are completely free and available to everyone.

Let me know. :)

(You can send a PM).

Chung Kuo wrote:EDIT 2>> Do we have the copyrights to the SGYY emoticons on the site?

For all intents, yes.
Black Mage, who made a chunk, is thrilled that they are used here, I imagine.
I made the other biggest chunk myself.

Oh, and a random idea I had today:

A silhouette-type face, perhaps a tough-looking modern-esque guy with big black glasses, modern hair, a goatee or something similar, but wearing a Three Kingdoms advisor’s hat, tied below his chin in the traditional manner. I don’t think I’d have to explain why that would be fitting.

It wouldn’t be a theme we could apply universally, though.

(And a general note to anyone who sees an idea in this discussion—don’t let it deter you from any of your own ideas or thoughts. One of the reason why this project was brought to the public is because every artist has their own talents, styles, and ideas, and you never know which one will just simply fit.)

And finally (I’m spamming—cope!) a general note on logo design:

The first step of logo design (professionally, after some general desires and the setting are discussed) is for the artist to come up with ideas and sketch them out for the client to view. The client can then see the different ideas and comment on them, perhaps identifying one they really like, or perhaps one that could be excellent if only some changes were made.

People who are talented artists, but who are not comfortable with graphics design, can contribute in this way! Just look at various company logos around the world to get an idea of what we are doing here. We can (and perhaps should) be more detailed than many of them, but a logo is very different from other forms of art.

A good idea, given by an artist, can be transformed into a logo by someone who understands that aspect of things and can bridge the gap.

I came up with this idea for a logo. I figured I would post it here for some feedback.

Besides my wishing it had more going on than a lone figure, I like it. Especially since the person on the horse is not clearly masculine or feminine (imo). However, I'd also change San Guo Yan Yi (三國演義) because this isn't San Guo Yan Yi, but a simulated version. A suggestion I thought up of is a play on words: 假三國無雙 (as opposed to 真三國無雙 aka Shin Sangoku Musou aka Dynasty Warriors). It's appropriate because this sim is not real (the meaning of 假 (Jia) while 真 (Zhen) means real or true) and it includes the three kingdoms (三國) allusion while Musou just means unparalleled, which is everyone's goal in the game: to be the best in the game (has nothing to do with dynasty or warriors, don't worry). Of course something with simulated would be more appropriate, but I always like puns and everyone knows 真三國無雙.
