Discuss your favorite books here! Can't believe we don't have a book topic.

I finished reading Bernard Cromwell's first two books in his Archer series. If you have ever read the Sharpe series made popular in a TV series in England, then you know who I am talking about. This man is pure genius on tap. A fantastic writer who takes dry history like the War of the Roses and spins a yarn that makes it not only enjoyable but addicting. Highly recommend his Archer series. Thomas of Hookton is not a hero in a fantasy sense. He is just a man that is a soldier in this series. Read it. It gives insight to the crossbow vs long bow argument.

Honestly this is the best series on archers. It shows how the English utalized the archer units in their army to a devastating effect on the French. Start with the book Harlequin and then read Vagabond. It also gives insight into nobility then and the church. Cromwell must have researched for a couple of years to compile all the juicy information he writes about.

An amazing series as Shi said Cromwell in my opinon is a genius i have read alot of his books , of course the quest for the holy grail is the best it ends with a book called Heretic and so on it is truly a great read , covering hte life of an english archer called Thomas and his familys past and connectio nto the grail.

If you like those kind of books may i also suggest a series called Emperor by Conn Iggulden another good series that is based on the life of Julius Ceasar a good read and also anything by David Gemmell.

1) isn't there already a book thread

2) I thought it was Bernard Cornwell

3) the only Cornwell book I read was Gallow's Thief, a good read.

4) Eric Flint's 1632 is a good alternate history book - US hicks in the 30 years war.

His Dark Materials, they want to make it into a movie. Armor-Wearing-Bears, Witches, Daemons, a little girl on a mission, alternate universes, Sounds like hollywood to me

EDIT: How could I forget to mention the compass with pictures?

Someone talked of David Gemmel he is truly a good author however Cornwell is more of a historical author with a added emotion due to it being fiction , Gemmel however is more fantasy in my opinon although he has many historical similarities his characters , locations and storyline is mostly fiction.

I find that in alot of books I read, certain things could be interpreted as modern day events, or previous events like the Christian Jesus. I have kinda seen that alot of fantasy book like The Wheel of Time have that kind of twist to them. Alot of character names have mismatched letters too, to show that they are supposed to be like that person. Am I the only person who has noticed this?

For fantasy, I stick to a few books I've kept pretty tried and true. I love George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire trilogy (in fact, my character Vargo Hoat was taken from the books), although it's soon to be a quartet with the release of A Feast for Crows this summer (we hope). It's fantasy, without really being too fantasy-ish. It's a world pretty much populated by just humans, some magical element with actual magic, dragons, spirits of the North, things like that. I think Martin's writing style for the books makes a good impression on someone just beginning to pick them up, as it's written in a very modern style with speech patterns. You'd almost think you were reading a book about something happening in modern day. I used to read some Dragonlance novels, but haven't actually picked one up in about a year or so. I think I'll look into getting the Annotated Chronicles, since that's where I started in the series yet haven't reread them in many years.

I recently finished Eiji Yoshikawa's Taiko for the second time. Very excellent book on Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Gets a good insight on who he was, at least in the historic fiction sense, and portrays other men of the era with a vision that'd seem like the author knew them (Oda Nobunaga, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Takeda Shingen and his ilk, etc.). I'm starting to read Yoshikawa's Musashi, but I haven't been in much of a reading mood lately, so I've only gotten a few chapters into it. Seems like a very good read, though, and I'm sure I'll get the ball rolling on that again soon.
Xiahou Meng will return for V6. Until then...
