Looking for: Military style strategy game
NOT: Civilization, Age of Empires, Starcraft

I saw some convo in the OOC thread about some other games. Particularly, I'm looking for a game that kind of "feels" like the battle system of RTK 8 or 9. (by far my favorite RTKs)

I've read a lot about TOTAL WAR but never tried the series. I'm not down for Dynasty Warriors because I played it a ton as a kid and the hack and slash really never changes. Not much strategy to that.

Any suggestions? Sorry the description is so vague.

Sounds like you want a turn-based, strategy game with focus on combat rather than "big-picture" stuff?

If that sounds right, I personally have loved XCOM and Banner Saga in that mould but I know there are plenty of others to take a look at. Otherwise, Total War: Shogun 2 is pretty great.

Oh yeah Banner Saga is a great game. If you're looking for a cheap easy-to-get into game, Warlock: Master of the Arcane is kind of fun.

Total War games are fun, but can sometimes get tedious with how long it takes to advance stuff but it doesn't have a battle system like RTK 8 or 9; it's real-time strategy. If you want a more real-time thing like the Total War series, Divinity: Dragon Commander is pretty good, especially with the ruler decision stuff and RP-style things; it's kind of a mix between real-time strategy and action since you can transform into a dragon and participate in the battle as well.

Expeditions: Conquistador is also a fantastic game with a lot of great RPG elements and a tactical battle system. I'm really looking forward to when they release the sequel, Expeditions: Viking.

Hmm, I've seen Banner Saga but haven't thought of trying it out. It looks kinda like FFT to me, which I loved, but I was thinking more of "big picture" battles with armies and tactics and the like.

Trying to do a little more research on RTK 13.. never tried it. It looks kind of promising though. Honestly I can't remember the last time I touched a RTK series game. I just remember they were getting worse as they went on and one of them ruined it for me completely where they took out the feel of being a "single" free officer climbing the ranks.

What do you guys think of RTK 13?

I'll check out all the other suggestions you guys have given and I appreciate it!

I like the game, but it's a bit bare bones. The interaction system could be more refined, the quest system is a huge step down from RTK X and as a Free Officer all you can do is serve another force. What it does right is the "Hero Mode" which is mini-scenarios where you play as an important officer during some large part of the novel/history. I honestly suggest you wait to see if they will announce the PUK for English before picking it up though. The PUK is set to improve a lot of things, with skill trees, growth paths, and a lot of new events and officers, along with upgrading the battle system.

Suicide Fox, I would advise you to try Age of Wonders 3.

It is turn-based, like RTK, 4X fantasy game with an overwhelming focus on battles. It has strategy map and battle maps, has tons of different ruler combinations which allow you to get different units, has tons of unique units, and in the battle map, you really need to use tactics to defeat enemy armies which are oftentimes superior to your own. Battles involving conquering cities is an extremely difficult affair against minimally well fortified defenses, requiring you to really think through your actions.

All in all, it's an extremely fun game.

What XY said, regarding RTK13. As I said in the OOC, I was massively disappointed. 8 and 10 were my favorites in the series, and 13 has practically none of what made those so great. As he said, it's pretty "barebones". If you can get it on sale, give it a shot, but if there's a PUK coming out, wait for that. I imagine that will be on a Steam sale of some sort.

Other than that...

And with the dlcs, it is even better. It adds more scenarios, more races, more classes, more units, more magics, etc.

You can make some Sweet combos too. My favourite is having an Elf (ranged units use longboard, which don't have long range damage penalty) Archdruid (has the Hunter ranged units, which besides being extra powerful, it's also invisible when in forest tiles) leader, which allow for pretty powerful ranged armies.

It's also super fun in multiplayer. If you get it, let me know, so we can play a game together.

Funny enough, I've been thinking about getting a PS2 emulator (again) and downloading RTK8. I still have a PS2 and the physical copy of RTK in my entertainment center, but it's such a hassle to get it out and plug it in. I mean, not really, but I'm just sooooooooo lazy...

And yeah, Total War is rad if you like grand strategy. You can research military or civil trees, focus on where and how best to mobilize your forces (because resources will get tight and make sure you can't just spam a ton of units, thanks to upkeep), and the actual real-time strategy battles are awesome. It's very satisfying watching your samurai just demolish ashigaru or your trebuchets blow a chunk of wall down while enemy archers are behind it.

If you're on the fence, check out some videos or read about it to get a better idea of what it's like. It's not for everyone, probably, but I love it.

Anyone playing Halo Wars 2? I got it, and I haven't really played it too much, but I was just wondering if anyone else had it and wanted to share their opinion on it.

My initial opinion is: it's fun, but every online match I play seems to end the same. Someone spams the Sentinels and wipes everyone else off the map. Literally, every game. That's my one big gripe right now is that online deathmatch/skirmish/whatevers seem to follow the same pattern of "whoever spams the Sentinels or ultimate units the fastest wins". I don't get the feeling of strategy or competition when I play, just a race for Sentinels or Scarabs. Everything else seems to get washed away by those two unit types.
