I liked it because it wasn't a cheap action movie that bastardized a culture for nonsensical sword fights, as Hollywood loves ever-so-much to do - and which, incidentally, is my major gripe with 47 Ronin. The Last Samurai was a quality story about cultural and philosophical differences, and in Nathan Algren's fight against his own people (metaphorically during/after his time with the Army and literally during the almost-Boshin War), it was something of a commentary on remembering who you are and being human. It was actually a major part of the movie, the more you think about it...

He hated Bagley for ordering him to murder the Sioux villagers, he drank himself into stupors while sarcastically and begrudgingly promoting firearms, Omura was selling out his own country for profit and killing off the samurai ways despite originally being from a samurai clan himself, and there's the constant theme of "technology and money vs. honor and tradition". Bagley even asked him, "What is it about your own people that you hate?", and the Emperor at the end of the movie made the comment about how the Japanese should "remember who they are" as he finally spoke up and turned down the tech-loving, money-obsessed American.

The Last Samurai is actually one of my favorite movies. The only thing you can really ding it for is that it's not historically accurate, but even then...it still at least TRIES to stick to the basics of the Boshin War, i.e. Imperialist vs. Shogunate, modernization vs. traditionalism, elite samurai vs. rifle-armed conscripts, etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was always under the impression that The Last Samurai was based off of the Satsuma Rebellion which happened in 1877 when a group of samurai revolted against the Meiji reign. The Boshin War was fought from 1868-1869 between radical Tokugawa supporters and the imperial court.

I recently saw a great Boshin-era film called When the Last Sword is Drawn that delves into sacrifice for one's beliefs and to protect one's family... Very heart-wrenching.

So I watched Star Wars this weekend. I'll say It is my favourite film out of the franchise; which I generally consider on the whole as pretty dumb universe. This played up to the right beats though and the characters were fantastically loveable, certainly the funniest and there was a lot of more subtext going on, which I hope is explored further in the following episodes.

I won't speak to anything specific just yet, still too soon and spoilers are s*** moves.

Oh. I felt the opposite. The characters were so flat and so disappointing, I felt nostalgia for Phantom Menace. There was very little to the movie, if you take out the fanservice.

^Same. Rey and Fin felt so undeveloped and it was disappointing especially when Fin had a pretty interesting background. Kylo Ren lost all intimidating factors halfway through the movie, and while some fans claim it was intentional, I seriously think they're overestimating Abrams. Entire movie relied heavily on nostalgia and it was painfully predictable all the way to the end. I think it's sad rehashing A New Hope automatically puts the seventh film in to consideration for this year's best films by the casual fanbase.

It was fun and I didn't mind the $30 or whatever I preorder paid to see it on release date. But I don't think it deserves the massive fan wank it's getting.

I have to disagree completely about the characters. They were fun and certainly not flat! Star Wars films don't spend a lot of time delving into characters' back-stories or motivations because that's not the type of film they are - instead relying on quick interactions, pacey but heartfelt exposition and tension through peril. And I felt all of that was done very well. I've seen people complain about it being too cheesy. TOO CHEESY. Have they seen Star Wars before? If you went in expecting an Oscar-worthy movie, of course you're going to be disappointed.

I don't think it's a disservice to call the obvious throwbacks to A New Hope a shrewd move. It's not necessarily purely for fanservice but to draw parallels between the similar situations which can also highlight the key differences. I'm looking forward to seeing what they can now explore with episodes VII and VIII to show us new elements in the Star Wars Universe.

I guess liking the characters and finding what development is good is someone's own preference. For me personally I need more interactions than some snippy jokes (Which I really didn't find funny) and "friendship through peril."

On the other I have the thoroughly disagree with calling the amount of nostalgia they shoved in simple throwbacks or parallels. The plot and events was ridiculously similar to A New Hope to just say it was throwing easter eggs. I think it was abundantly clear after the mixed reactions from episodes 1-3 that they decided to rehash episode 4 to appease the fans. Some people might be okay with that; I personally want something new. And with how much writing has advanced today I was hoping for more than "lol space nazis" for the First Order.

Maybe I'm just not a big Star Wars fan. Because apparently for others, a movie that's a 7/10 automatically turns in to a 10/10 just because it's Star Wars.

I wasn't suggesting the parallels should be considered easter eggs, quite the opposite! Taking a similar structure and adapting it to new characters and situations is a great way to highlight key changes and accentuate development (e.g. Minor Spoiler Han Solo, so skeptical in original trilogy, now being Rey's Obi-wan). And that opening scene! "The shadow of a deceased Empire still lurks over the galaxy, but the threat seems greater than ever". I think it's far too simplistic to shrug all of the similarities off as mere fanservice, but instead try and view it as a canny way of restarting the franchise.

I share your point on the First Order (even if, again, this is something not new to the original trilogy - when do they really explain the Empire?) and maybe one or two scenes could've shed a bit more light on what occurred in the aftermath of the demise of the Emperor and Vader.

Everybody loved The Phantom Menace when it came out. Pretty sure Super Mario Sunshine got 10/10 from every review mag. I refuse to watch it until my annoyance over the hype, the fanbois, and the haters goes away, so I can enjoy it if it's actually enjoyable.

Agreed for the most part about shallow characterizations, though I think that Rey was perhaps the one character who didn't feel shallow to me. Fin, though, definitely fell flat to me. It felt like they were making him a protagonist while having him act more like comic relief.
Entire movie relied heavily on nostalgia and it was painfully predictable all the way to the end. I think it's sad rehashing A New Hope automatically puts the seventh film in to consideration for this year's best films by the casual fanbase.

And agreed again, this time entirely so. I do hope that the eighth film ends up delving into some new territory rather than just playing to nostalgia for two hours and change.

Not your standard movie post, but last year I wrote and co-starred in a Steampunk Boba Fett fan film sequel, and today our director posted our trailer in celebration for May the 4th.

Trailer

Original film (I had no involvement with this)

This was a pretty fun project to work on, and I feel like our end product is gonna be a really enjoyable fan flick. We're slating our full release for "Mask of Vengeance" in time for Dragon*Con later this year, so check out the trailer and see if it catches your interest.
Xiahou Meng will return for V6. Until then...
