How do you get the file size below 6kb without shrinking the image to 40px tall?

The avatar I was working on is 10 kb and I can't get it to below 6 without a lot of shrinking.

I use PS CS3.

The trick is to use 'File' -> 'Save for Web'. If you save this particular graphic as a high-quality JPG (90%, for example) you can get down to around 6-7 KB. If you save it as a PNG graphic with 256 colors, which works very well for a graphic like this one, you can get it below 5 KBs and it remains quite crisp.
